Added sugar may be the single worst ingredient in the modern diet. Sugar can have harmful effects on your metabolism, mood and contribute to all sorts of diseases. Here are four alarming reasons why you should avoid processed sugar like the plague.
1. Sugar May Shorten Your Life – A 2013 study estimated that 170,000 deaths worldwide may be attributed to drinking sugary beverages. The authors summarize that deaths were caused by an association with sugar-sweetened beverages and chronic disease risk such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
2. Sugar can be linked to cancer production and may impact cancer survival. Sugar impacts our body’s ability to regulate insulin. And there is a well-documented link between insulin resistance and cancer. A recent study showed that sugars in the intestine triggered the formation of a hormone called GIP that in turn affects the cells likelihood of cancer formation.
3. It could be genetic. You may have said, “I need my sugar fix.” In fact, for some people, sugar can be very addicting. A recent study of 580 participants showed that those who had genetic changes in a hormone called ghrelin consumed more sugar than those who did not. Researchers think that the genetic components that affect your ghrelin release may determine whether or not you seek to boost your brain’s reward system through your sweet tooth.
4. Drain on Your Brain. A 2009 study found a strong relationship between glucose consumption and the aging of our brain cells. A 2012 study found that excess sugar consumption was linked to deficiencies in memory and overall cognitive health.
