Do you ever feel like you cannot remember names? Or do your keys go missing frequently? Follow these six steps to boost your memory:
- Challenge your mind. Activities that stimulate your mind help to keep your brain in shape — and may keep memory loss at bay. Read a section of the newspaper that you normally skip. Take alternate routes when driving. Make brain training part of your regular routine.
- Socialize regularly. Making time to spend with friends and loved ones helps lessen depression and stress, both of which can contribute to memory loss.
- Organize your life. We are more likely to forget when things are cluttered all around us. Keep to-do lists current and check off items you’ve completed. Set aside a certain place for keys and other essentials.
- Stop multi-tasking. Limit distractions, and don’t try to do too many things at once. If you focus on the information that you’re trying to remember, you’ll be more likely to recall it later. It might also help to connect what you’re trying to remember to a favorite song or another familiar concept.
- Get more sleep. Sleep plays a major role in helping you consolidate your memories. Most adults need seven to eight hours of sleep a day.
- Make physical exercise a priority. Physical activity increases blood flow to your whole body, including your brain. This helps to keep your memory sharp.
